Rajendra Bhatia has made remarkable contributions to Mathematics research and teaching, and to growth of Mathematics in India. He has been honored with various awards including the Medal for Young Scientists of the Indian National Science Academy (INSA) in 1982, the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in 1995 and the Hans Schneider Prize of the International Linear Algebra Society (ILAS) in 2016. We are privileged to hold a conference on Matrix and Functional Analysis on the occasion of his turning sixty five in 2017.The focus of the Conference will be on various facets of Matrix Analysis, Functional Analysis and Harmonic Analysis to which Rajendra Bhatia has made widely influential contributions. Some special lectures will be devoted to a survey of his work and the developments arising out of it.

Dr B. R. Ambedkar National Institute of Technology, Jalandhar was established in the year 1987 as Regional Engineering College and was given the status of National Institute of Technology (Deemed University) by the Government of India on October 17, 2002. Now the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India has declared the Institute as "Institute of National Importance". The Institute campus is wide spread over an area of 154 acres, situated in the surrounding of lush green outskirts of Jalandhar. It has many topographical features, various buildings of different nature with clean and wide roads surrounded by a green belt. The institute is one of the prestigious institutions of India. It offers B.Tech. / M.Tech. in nine engineering disciplines, M.Sc. in Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics along with the research programme leading to Ph.D. Degree.


The Department of Mathematics offers M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs in Mathematics. The department also teaches Mathematics to B.Tech, M.Tech and Ph.D. students belonging to various engineering streams. The department keeps in pace with the advances in technology, by providing its students state-of-the art computer facilities. The student gain knowledge of various new areas of research using the internet facilities made available in their labs and hostels. The students get the opportunity of attending seminars and invited lectures delivered by eminent mathematicians and computer scientists. They also get the opportunity of campus placement in various national and multinational companies. All students and faculty members are members of "Society for promotion of Mathematics" which organizes different events throughout the year.
